Which refills fit a Parker pen: G2, gel and rollerball — how to choose the right replacement
Parker ballpoint pens take a G2 format refill, rollerballs take a capillary rollerball refill, and fountain pens take cartridges. We explain how to identify your pen type, how the original differs from an equivalent, and how to replace the refill in a minute.
Parker ballpoint pens — Jotter, IM, Urban, Sonnet and others — use a G2 format refill (also called a “Parker-style” refill, ISO 12757-2 standard) about 97–98 mm long. Both original Parker refills and G2 format gel refills fit them. Parker rollerballs (pens with a cap and liquid ink) need a different refill — a rollerball refill — and fountain pens are filled with ink cartridges. Before buying, check your pen type and the length of the old refill.
A Parker pen is often received as a gift, and when the refill runs out, it turns out that there are several kinds of “Parker refills” and they are not interchangeable. Here we work out exactly which one your pen needs and where you can buy a replacement.

Ballpoint pens: G2 format
Most Parker ballpoint pens — Jotter, IM, Urban, Sonnet, Vector and others — are designed for a G2 format refill. It is a thick metal or plastic refill about 6 mm in diameter and about 97–98 mm long. There are two replacement options for them:
- Original Parker G2 Standard ballpoint refill — metal body, M (medium) line, 97 mm long, branded blister pack. Available in black and blue.
- G2 format gel refill — a non-original equivalent in a transparent body through which you can see how much ink is left. The supplier states compatibility with Parker Jotter, IM, Sonnet, Urban and other G2 format pens. You can buy them here: blue G2 gel refill and black G2 gel refill — 23 ₴ each.
Parker rollerballs: a separate rollerball refill
A rollerball looks like a ballpoint pen, but it has a cap and writes with liquid capillary ink. Its refill is different — thinner, with a ball that needs a cap so the ink does not dry out. You cannot put a G2 ballpoint refill into a rollerball, or the other way round. For Parker rollerballs, there are non-original capillary refills with a wax seal on the tip: black and blue. The supplier does not list the exact pen models, so compare the new refill with the old one by length and shape.
How to replace the refill in a Parker pen
- Unscrew the barrel: in most Parker ballpoint models, including the Jotter, the thread is hidden in the middle — hold the upper part and turn the lower part counterclockwise.
- Take out the old refill and place it next to the new one: the length and diameter should match.
- Insert the new refill tip first, all the way in.
- Screw the barrel back together and press the button a few times — the refill should extend and retract without sticking.
- Test the pen on scrap paper: for the first few centimeters, the ink may flow unevenly.
