pH strips or a pH meter: which to choose for water, soil and aquariums
Litmus strips show pH in steps of 1 within 2 seconds and need no preparation, while a pH meter reads to hundredths but needs calibration. We compare accuracy, price and convenience and explain how to measure correctly with strips.
pH strips (litmus or indicator paper) show acidity in steps of 1 pH within 1–2 seconds, with no batteries and no calibration — they are enough to tell whether something is “acidic, neutral or alkaline”. A pH meter shows the value to hundredths (0.01 pH), but it needs calibration and electrode care. If the difference between pH 6.5 and 7.0 matters to you — for an aquarium, hydroponics, a pool or a lab — get a pH meter; for rough checks, school experiments and soil, strips are enough.
Both methods measure the same thing — the acidity of a liquid on a scale from 1 to 14, where 7 is neutral, lower values mean an acidic environment and higher values mean an alkaline one. The difference is in accuracy, convenience and price.

How to measure pH with strips correctly
- Take a strip with dry hands without touching the indicator zone.
- Dip the indicator part into the liquid for 1–2 seconds.
- Take it out and immediately compare the color with the scale on the package in daylight — the color changes over time.
- Close the package right away: humid air damages the indicator.
When strips are enough
- Checking whether the water in a barrel or settling tank has “gone sour”.
- Roughly assessing soil before planting: acidic, neutral or alkaline.
- School and student experiments, chemistry and biology lessons.
- Quickly checking whether your pH meter is reading wrong between calibrations.
For schools, labs and anyone who measures often, a set of 800 strips (10 packs of 80) for 195 ₴ is better value.
When you really need a pH meter
- Aquarium. For many species of fish and plants, a difference of a few tenths of pH matters.
- Hydroponics. The nutrient solution is kept in a narrow range — usually 5.5–6.5 — and a strip with a step of 1 will not help here.
- Pool. How well chlorine works depends on pH — you need accuracy to tenths.
- Production and labs: cosmetics, drinks, juices, solutions.

What if you need more than pH
For checking drinking water, a well or a pool, 14-in-1 test strips are handy: besides pH, they show hardness, alkalinity, chlorine, bromine, nitrates, nitrites, sulfites and five heavy metals. Are litmus paper and pH strips the same thing?
In everyday use, both names mean the same thing — indicator paper that changes color depending on pH. Yellow Square strips cover the full range of 1–14 in steps of 1 pH.
How accurate are pH strips?
The resolution is 1 pH, which means a strip can tell pH 5 from pH 7, but not pH 6.5 from 7.0. For more accurate measurements you need a pH meter.
Can I test soil with strips?
Yes: mix the soil with distilled water at roughly 1 : 2, let it settle and test the clear liquid above the sediment.
Why doesn’t the strip color match the scale?
Most often the cause is the liquid’s own color, poor lighting or dipping the strip for too long. Compare the color right after a 1–2 second dip, in daylight.
